Mother and child pendant: the gift of a mother's love

A mother's love is the greatest gift of all. With no requirements or demands; nothing is held back. Rare is the jewelry design that truly captures the emotion and power of maternal love. A Mother and Child pendant is a loving symbol of the unbreakable bond between a mother and child. No matter what a mother will always love her child.

A mother and child pendant is a stylized pendant depicting the embrace of a mother and child. They come in a myriad of different styles, using white or yellow gold, or even two tone. They can even be set with diamonds. For mothers with more than one child mother and child pendants come in twin or triplet styles. The original and most beautiful designs are those created by Janel Russell.

Janel Russell's story:

Janel Russell is blessed with two gifts: her creativity and her son.

When Janel was a young mother she enrolled in the Minneapolis Vocational School and studied jewelry manufacturing and design. Later Janel went to work for Gary Bonstrom at G. Allen Jewelers. After work hours were done Janel would stay to work on her own designs. She dreamed of creating a design that would celebrate her great love for her child.

Janel had worn a single pearl around her neck ever since her son had been born. It was her unconscious habit to constantly play with the pearl until it would literally wear out and need to be replaced. In 1980, after her pearl had worn out yet again, Janel decided to create a design that would showcase to the world the unbreakable bond between her and her son.

In 1980 the mother and child pendant was born. Janel proudly wore the beautiful piece, and soon friends and family were asking Janel to make one for them. The mother and child pendant became a phenomenon. In 1981, Kirchner Corporation, who arranged to market it in the U.S. as Mother and Child?, discovered Janel's copyrighted design. Janel's Mother and Child? jewelry line quickly became one of the most sought after family-theme jewelry items in history.

Where is the best place to purchase a mother and child pendant?

To get an idea of the different styles and prices that are available in a mother and child pendant it is convenient to view them online.

Just type "mother and child pendant" into an Internet search engine like Google or Yahoo and you will find several reliable websites that specialize in mother and child pendants.

The cost of a mother and child pendant is dependant upon the metal used and whether or not it is set with diamonds. In solid 14K yellow or white gold, a mother and child pendant should cost about $150 to $200. The same pendant with diamonds can range from $260 to $350, depending on the diamonds.

The bond of love:

Every mother cherishes the bond she shares with her child. A bond so strong that nothing and nobody can challenge it. A mother and child pendant signifies and celebrates that bond. A mother and child pendant celebrates love at its most profound.

Using Pendant Lights Creatively

We all have some form of pendant lighting in our homes as this is the most common indoor light fixture for many homes.

When we talk about pendant lighting, we are referring to a light fitting that is suspended from the ceiling by an electrical flex and has some sort of light source, i.e.light bulb and lamp shade attached at the other end. Really speaking, pendant lighting is not just one type or style of light fixture. It can refer to chandelier lighting or just plain paper globes. Both of these light fixtures fall into the very broad category of pendant lighting.

By its very nature, pendant lighting is very noticeable and therefore it is wise to choose your pendants with great care. Pendant lights can range from the most simplistic of designs to the more decorative and ornamental styles so ensure that the type and style of pendant light you purchase, is one that complements the decor of the room. As well as aesthetics, you will also want to see how much light your potential pendant light will give out. Its not just the type of bulb that you have that determines the quality of light given out.

Factors such as the room size, the height of the light source above the floor, the size, shape and material of the pendant lampshade - all of these things affect the quality of light.

A lot of the pendant style lighting fixtures available these days draw heavily on their ancestors which, in the pre-electric days, were chandeliers often bearing multiple candles. A more modern day type of light fixture that is still included as a pendant light is the faithful paper globe. These come in all different sizes and easily dominate a room with their full blown shape.

Rise-and-fall pendant lights can be adjusted so that they can be placed at different heights from the floor. These are the types of pendants that you would typically adjust so that the light fixture hangs low over the dining table in order to produce a more intimate mood. The norm in many households is to have the pendant light in the centre of a room and then perhaps to supplement this light by various other light fixtures within the room.

A more creative way of using pendant lighting would be to have pendant lights in off-centre positions within the room, maybe to complement some of your interior furnishings or an ornamental object.

Pendant lighting can be used creatively to delineate areas of space within a room. So, by using your imagination and creative flair, you can use the lighting to segment your room into different areas, perhaps having an corner for listening to music or reading a book, for example. Also, having multiple pendant lights hanging together is a more effective way of showcasing your lighting and visually looks better too.

Even if you have pendant lights in different parts of the room, you do not necessarily have to ensure that they are identical provided that they still go together stylistically.

Pendant lighting is versatile, adaptable and is available in many styles and designs to suit every taste and pocket.

Pendant Lighting

Pendant lighting fixtures are suspended from the ceiling and get their name from the jewelry accessory of the same name. Pendant lighting has a distinctive appeal and is considered perfect for places like kitchen islands, desks, breakfast nooks and the like. Pendant lighting can be either a single pendant lighting fixture or two or three different ones teamed up to provide a dramatic effect. Generally when two or three pendant lighting fixtures are teamed up, mini pendant lighting fixtures are used. The area of pendant lighting provides a lot of scope for the use of creative designs and ideas.

It is advisable to mount pendant lighting fixtures at least 24" to 30" above the area to be lit. When mini pendants are used, the ideal height would be 18" to 24" above the surface area to be lighted. When two or three pendants are used, an adjustable pendant bar can be used to fix them at different heights. This makes it possible to adjust heights from time to time, varying the overall lighting effect in the process.

Pendant lighting fixtures are available in various styles. Some of the commonly seen styles are sleek clean designs, reflective stained glass and crinkle glass designs. Pendant lighting fixtures are task oriented and provide necessary lighting for specific areas. The intensity of light needed can be dictated by the choice of bulb used inside the pendant lighting fixture.

Most pendant lighting fixtures are available with chains and rods that enable adaptation for different heights. Multiple pendant lights in a single fixture at staggered heights create a dramatic effect and are ideal for use little corners of large rooms. This kind of lighting creates an interesting area in an otherwise ordinary room.

Pendant lighting fixtures made of hand blown glass are available starting around $30, with some costing $500 and above.

Differing budgets and lighting needs can be catered to efficiently by the imaginative use of pendant lighting.
