History of Sterling Silver Jewelry Charms

Charms are also known as amulets and pendants. They are as popular today as they have been throughout recorded history. Ancient Egyptians wore bracelets with charms or amulets. They were used to protect against bad luck and evil forces. They began with religious symbols and became a part of everyday dressing.

Charms/jewelry were made of almost any material of value to people in their time. Many were made of precious metal. Others were made with gemstones inlaid in them or mounted with precious metals in the form of necklaces, crowns, staffs, and bracelets. Queen Victoria gets the credit for popularizing jewelry charms throughout Europe by wearing lockets or charms on her royal bracelets

America became enchante with Charms around the time frame of World War II. Soldiers returning from duty station brought with them various types of charms or pendants. Today popular charms are maded from Gold and Sterling silver. Other materials are still used in the making of charms.

Sterling Silver Charms today represent as many things as there are interests and personalities. Some charms or pendants represent the religious leanings of the wearer. They also represent the interest of the wearer such a musical instrument for a music lover, a pair of sneakers for a jogger, or ballet slippers for a ballerina. Imagination is the only limit for what a charm can represent. Silver charms are also used to commerate life events such as births, weddings, anniversaries, birthdays, or graduations.

Silver is a soft metal and its usage has been favored for centuries. It is used to make charms often related to religious worship. Silver has been a symbol of comfortable living. Sterling silver is much stronger than pure silver which is harder to work with when making pendants or charms. Sterling silver is approximately ninety percent silver. The last ten percent or so can be any one of the following: copper, zinc, or nickel and is more durable than pure silver but it still retains its inherent beauty.

Charms whether made of sterling silver or some other materials are often used to represent the person who wears or carries the charm. As has been mentioned however, they often represent the interests and personality of the wearer. During war particular items are given to the soldiers who are going off to fight. When a young teen-aged couple ’goes steady’ the young man generally gives the girl his ring or something of particular value to him. The girls might also do the same.

Charms have also been said to represent the particular spirituality of the wearer. Many people wear plain simple crosses while still others will wear the cross with the corpus - the body of Christ on it. Others wear saints medals. Lockets are worn with images of loved ones inside. Once used to ward against evil spirits, for good luck, and for protection in times of trouble charms have come to be an adornment for the wearer. Charm bracelets are gifts that keep on giving. A charm is often given for birthdays, graduations, a dance recital, or sports victory. They make wonderful gifts for young girls that will grow with them. There are charm necklaces as well.

Charms

Since ancient times, charms have held a very significant place in society. May it be for superstitious reasons or for their quaint and delicate beauty, men and women around the world have used them since the beginning of time.

Charms come in various forms, from bracelets and amulets to pendants and necklaces. Each one of these have their own individual beauty and significance. The first proper record of charms being used dates back to the ancient Egyptians. Charms held a religious significance for these people and were believed to be a key element for a passage into the afterlife. This is evident from the several charm artifacts found in the Egyptian tombs.

The advent of Christianity several centuries later, brought along with it a whole new era for charms. The crosses and fish charms called ?ichthys? became popular among the followers of the religion. The horseshoe charm, which evolved around the same era, is still considered lucky.

Later on, during the Middle Ages, charms assumed a whole new meaning. They were used along with incantations and spells to curse enemies and protect the ones wearing them. During he Renaissance period, the importance and significance of charms faded as the print media spread education and did away with superstition. However, charms saw a revival during Queen Victoria?s reign where they were used more as ornamental jewelry than for mysticism.

Today, charms have very little superstitious or religious significance and are used primarily as jewelry items. Charm bracelets, necklaces, anklets and amulets go very well with most attire and hence have become a popular fashion accessory. With their myriad

variety and beautiful designs, charms are a perfect way to compliment ones individuality and lifestyle.

A Circle of Life Diamond Pendant Will Round Out Your Existence

If you're in the market for a pendant or necklace, there are almost infinite varieties, shapes, and sizes to choose from. Whether it's a circle of life diamond pendant or black pearl necklace, they are a great treat or gift to give on birthdays and holidays. Here are the top five choices people are making for necklaces and pendants.

? A sterling silver ID pendant that displays the recipient's name in a readable script is popular. There are three Austrian crystals just below the name that match the birth stone color. It hangs on a neat diamond rolo chain.

? Once again, Austrian crystals adorn this gorgeous Heart's Birthstone Necklace, complete with a dangling 10-inch chain that has interspersed spacer beads.

? Angel Birthstone Charms are a top-selling item and you have a choice again of Austrian crystal birthstone colors. Complete with 14-K gold plating, or you can add your own gold necklace chain, if you wish.

? The Sterling Silver Mother's Birthstone Charm Pendant is popular and is meant, of course, for moms and grandmothers. It has an asymmetrical sterling heart, which makes a great gift for a loved one, personalized with their birthstone color. It comes complete with a 20-inch sterling silver chain.

? And finally the Birthstone Baby Bootie Charm is a wonderful necklace and is also a good choice for mothers or grandmothers who want to commemorate their children's birth month in a unique way. A single gem sits in the opening of the shoe and the charm dangles by itself on a chain.

The floating heart diamond necklace is also immensely popular and is absolutely gorgeous! It comes with a stunning chain that adjusts from 16 to 18 inches and has a very sturdy lobster-claw clasp. The pendant is 1 ? inches by 1 ? inches and is a very thick piece. This is not a flimsy or cheap piece and is sold at auctions regularly. It is heavily layered in Rhodium to give you many years of carefree wear. A circle of life diamond pendant is the number-one selling pendant and comes complete with a two-carat diamond circle. It looks extremely elegant for almost any occasion. If you love to collect jewelry, it is a must-have item. The circle of diamonds consists of 25, round, cut stones totaling two carats and comes on an 18-inch chain.

Another fantastic piece of jewelry is the black pearl necklace. The Tahitian, black pearl necklace is commonly seen in shades of black and gray. Although it does have a black body color, it will vary in its overtones, which are sometimes green or pink. This popular necklace goes well with fair or light colored skin as the pink overtones blend well. Women with dark skin are those who will more easily find the cream or black overtones look best. The majority of black pearls for making a black pearl necklace come from French Polynesia. The French Polynesian government has set a minimum nacre thickness at 0.8 millimeters.

Anything less than that is not allowed to be sold on the market. Nacre is the crystalline, calcium substance that is secreted by the mollusk. It is a defense against foreign article intrusion into its body, and this is the shiny part of the pearl. The Tahitian black pearl necklace doesn't come cheap and you're going to end up paying a lot for this stunning piece of jewelry. Of course, only you know what you like best and even though I've listed the top five selling necklaces and pendants, it all boils down to your own personal choice. Whether it's a circle of life diamond pendant or floating heart diamond necklace, jewelry will make you feel elegant and beautiful!

Using Pendant Lights Creatively

We all have some form of pendant lighting in our homes as this is the most common indoor light fixture for many homes.

When we talk about pendant lighting, we are referring to a light fitting that is suspended from the ceiling by an electrical flex and has some sort of light source, i.e.light bulb and lamp shade attached at the other end. Really speaking, pendant lighting is not just one type or style of light fixture. It can refer to chandelier lighting or just plain paper globes. Both of these light fixtures fall into the very broad category of pendant lighting.

By its very nature, pendant lighting is very noticeable and therefore it is wise to choose your pendants with great care. Pendant lights can range from the most simplistic of designs to the more decorative and ornamental styles so ensure that the type and style of pendant light you purchase, is one that complements the decor of the room. As well as aesthetics, you will also want to see how much light your potential pendant light will give out. Its not just the type of bulb that you have that determines the quality of light given out.

Factors such as the room size, the height of the light source above the floor, the size, shape and material of the pendant lampshade - all of these things affect the quality of light.

A lot of the pendant style lighting fixtures available these days draw heavily on their ancestors which, in the pre-electric days, were chandeliers often bearing multiple candles. A more modern day type of light fixture that is still included as a pendant light is the faithful paper globe. These come in all different sizes and easily dominate a room with their full blown shape.

Rise-and-fall pendant lights can be adjusted so that they can be placed at different heights from the floor. These are the types of pendants that you would typically adjust so that the light fixture hangs low over the dining table in order to produce a more intimate mood. The norm in many households is to have the pendant light in the centre of a room and then perhaps to supplement this light by various other light fixtures within the room.

A more creative way of using pendant lighting would be to have pendant lights in off-centre positions within the room, maybe to complement some of your interior furnishings or an ornamental object.

Pendant lighting can be used creatively to delineate areas of space within a room. So, by using your imagination and creative flair, you can use the lighting to segment your room into different areas, perhaps having an corner for listening to music or reading a book, for example. Also, having multiple pendant lights hanging together is a more effective way of showcasing your lighting and visually looks better too.

Even if you have pendant lights in different parts of the room, you do not necessarily have to ensure that they are identical provided that they still go together stylistically.

Pendant lighting is versatile, adaptable and is available in many styles and designs to suit every taste and pocket.

The Meaning of a Pendant

What is the significance of a pendant? A pendant is a decoration and symbolization of the things that a person treasures. A favorite past time, a special person, a milestone affair, or something that describes you are just a few ideas of pendants to display on a necklace.

Pendants are great gift ideas, acknowledging a friend or family member’s interests. To consider what kind of pendants you can give a loved one, here are some ideas of how you can celebrate some of the things that they treasure most.

Sports pendant-Basketball and jewelry might not mix, but with a sports pendant, you can display a friend’s passion for a sport in elegant fashion. Whether it’s a professional sports team fan, or a friend’s identity with a sport, you can find a favorite team pendant or a sports pendant to recognize their interests.

Friendship pendant-A display honoring your best friend can be captured in a friendship pendant. A broken heart split in the middle, this pendant is not to be mistaken by what is described. In elementary or junior high, you might have recalled two friends displaying half of a broken heart, implying their relationship as best friends.

Gemstone pendant-On a loved one’s birthday celebrate their birth with a gemstone pendant. As every month has its own gemstone, you will personalize your loved one’s birthday with their month’s birthstone. A ruby, a sapphire, a diamond or amethyst pendant, a gemstone pendant will be a frequent reminder of the significance of their birth.

Pendant lockets-Such a keepsake as a baby picture will be a treasure for a pendant locket. Giving your mother such a necklace will be her reminder of you as a baby, a phase of nurturing and raising you from the time you were little until now. Thank her with a memorable pendant locket for her to wear so she can always think of you.

If you choose to give your loved one a pendant, just remember that it is not just a gift you’re giving them. You will be capturing one of their symbolic treasures in a beautiful necklace, an adornment they will enjoy forever.

Whether you're looking for a gift for a friend or loved one or if you just want something for yourself, a pendant is an excellent gift idea.
